Unemployment rate on the decline! Record result in May

At the end of May, the registered unemployment rate estimated by the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy reached 5.0%, 0.1 percentage point lower than in April this year. The number of the unemployed amounted to 778,300, i.e. 18,800 less than at the end of April this year. Since 1990, there has never been a lower number of unemployed people recorded or a lower registered unemployment rate in May.

The registered unemployment rate estimated by the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy at the end of May this year reached 5.0 per cent. - This is 0.1 percentage point lower than a month ago and in May 2023. Compared to last year, the number of unemployed fell by 24.0 thousand (i.e. 3.0%).

The registered unemployment rate at the end of May 2024 ranged from 3.0% in the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship to 8.3% in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship. Persons registering as unemployed most likely used to work in the manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, motor vehicle repair and construction sectors prior to registration.

The number of registered unemployed at the end of February 2024 included 12,300 unemployed Ukrainian citizens who accounted for 1.6% of the total number of registered jobless. Compared to the situation at the end of February 2022 (beginning of the war in Ukraine), the number of unemployed Ukrainian citizens registered at labour offices increased by almost eight times, and fell by 0.7 thousand, i.e. 5.1% compared to the previous month.

According to the preliminary data, in May 2024, employers reported 83.6 thousand job vacancies and occupational activation places to labour offices, i.e. 6.4 thousand (7.1%) less than in the previous month and 11,200 (11.8%) less than in May 2023.

Unemployment according to Eurostat

Poland remains a country with one of the lowest unemployment rates in the European Union. According to the data published on 30 May 2024, in April 2024, the unemployment rate, calculated according to the definition adopted by Eurostat, amounted to 3.0% in Poland, compared to 6.0% in the European Union and 6.4% in the EURO area. Poland occupied the second lowest unemployment rate in the EU (after the Czech Republic, 2.7%).
