We need solidarity, including financial solidarity
14.03.2022
The first subject of the meeting of the EU Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council, undertaken on the initiative of Poland, is assistance provided to citizens of Ukraine leaving their country due to the war. The activities of Poland were presented in Brussels by Minister Marlena Maląg.
Minister Maląg appealed for the solidarity of all European Union countries. – It is needed by Ukraine but also by the helping countries. Joint declarations are important, but financial solidarity and joint measures, enabling further relocation of persons arriving to the countries bordering Ukraine, are also necessary – said the Minister.
Polish system of assistance
- Poland, which has already accepted more than 1.7 million citizens of Ukraine, faced an unprecedented challenge and a very responsible task – said Minister Marlena Maląg. - In the first instance, we provided them with safety, shelter and meals. The Minister of Family described the Polish system of assistance: its organisation and the forms of support provided.
PESEL for citizens of Ukraine
In order to legalise the stay of citizens of Ukraine as efficiently as possible, the Parliament adopted and the President of the Republic of Poland signed the special Act which is already in force. It ensures legal stay, full access to the labour market, health care and education for Ukrainians who came to our country after 24 February. From yesterday, they can also receive a special PESEL number.
The Act provides for a one-off support in the amount of PLN 300 and co-financing for Poles who, through municipalities, receive Ukrainians in their homes, in the amount of PLN 1,200 per month.
Minister Marlena Maląg stressed that about 90% of persons arriving to Poland are women with children. – The extremely low unemployment rate, set by Eurostat at 2.8%, suggests that they will find employment, provided that employers prepare appropriate offers. Equally important in this area is the expansion of the network of places of care for children below three. – Appropriate solutions are also included in the new Act – assured the Minister.
