STH investments in Żyrardów and Międzyborów. The company will build a flyover and a tunnel across railway line 1
17.05.2023
The Solidarity Transport Hub company will finance the construction of a road flyover in Żyrardów and a tunnel for pedestrians and cyclists in Międzyborów in the Jaktorów commune. These facilities will enable safe coverage of the Warsaw - Koluszki railway line, one of the busiest railway routes in Poland. The original location of the flyover was changed following the consultation with residents and local authorities. An agreement to this effect was signed today by the government plenipotentiary for the Solidarity Transport Hub (STH), representatives of the company and the authorities of Żyrardów.
As part of the STH railway junction, building of a section of the new railway line No. 88 is planned, connecting the designed line No. 85 (Warsaw - Łódź) with the existing line No. 1, which runs through Koluszki towards Łódź, Piotrków Trybunalski and Częstochowa. The tracks of the connector to railway line 88 and the Warsaw - Koluszki route will converge on the border of Żyrardów and Międzyborów (Jaktorów commune).
In order to streamline traffic flow and improve the safety of residents, the STH company planned to build a flyover in Miedzyborów, connecting Poniatowskiego and Kościuszki streets and eliminate the the turnpike crossing between Wojska Polskiego and Partyzantów street (replacing it with a tunnel for pedestrians and cyclists located in the same place).
Following consultations with residents and local authorities, the STH moved the planned location of the flyover: by 450 metres in a western direction, to the border of Żyrardów and Międzyborów. On the south side, the flyover will be incorporated directly into provincial road 719, namely, Jaktorowska street, and on the north side the access will be run along. Okulickiego street and undeveloped areas. At the same time, the STH company maintained its plans concerning the construction of a tunnel under the tracks for pedestrians and cyclists at Wojska Polskiego and Partyzantów streets (at the site of the current turnpike crossing), which will allow, among other things, safe access from both sides of the village to the platforms of the Międzyborów passenger stop.
The STH company, which is entirely responsible for the design of the new airport and around 2000 km of new railway lines, listens carefully to the needs of local residents and to the signals coming from local authorities. Originally, our experts planned a flyover above railway line No. 1 in Międzyborów, but in order to meet the communication needs of the residents of Żyrardów, we decided to design one near the eastern border of this city
- says Marcin Horała, Deputy Minister of Funds and Regional Policy Government Plenipotentiary for STH.
The joint investment with the City of Żyrardów means the proper use of public funds and merging of two projects into one. The first project results from the transport needs of the town of Żyrardów, while the second one - from the construction of the STH railway junction and the elimination of the existing road crossing in Międzyborów
- says Radosław Kantak, Member of the Management Board of the STH for Railway Investment.
The agreement signed today between the Government Plenipotentiary for the STH and the STH company and the city of Żyrardów defines the terms and conditions and framework for cooperation during the construction of the flyover and assumes that it will be financed from the STH Programme. The Żyrardów City Council will prepare a concept for the specific location and design assumptions for the flyover and the associated road system, as well as obtain the necessary environmental and location decisions.
Railway line 1 is one of the busiest sections of the Polish railway network. At present, there is no collision-free crossing at a distance of more than 8 km between the centre of Żyrardów and the Jaktorów commune. Therefore, we have already developed a concept for a flyover above this route in 2019. Now, with the support of the STH company, it will be possible to build it. The effect of the investment will involve, among other things, increasing the safety of our residents
- says Lucjan Chrzanowski, Mayor of the City of Żyrardów.

The first project results from the transport needs of the town of Żyrardów, while the second one - from the construction of the STH railway junction and the elimination of the existing road crossing in Międzyborów

As part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR), the STH has recently launched the “Safe Roads” programme, which aims to improve traffic safety, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists. The programme has a budget of nearly PLN 80 million and will fund more than 40 projects on the territory of 13 local authorities in the vicinity of the planned STH airport. As part of its CSR activities, the company also co-financed, among others, the purchase of 10 new buses for Grodzisk Mazowiecki, five firefighting and rescue vehicles for the Voluntary Fire Brigade (OSP) from Baranów and Teresin, new equipment for rescue operations for the Water Volunteer Rescue Service (WOPR) from Grodzisk Mazowiecki and the construction of a helicopter landing pad at the Western Hospital in Grodzisk Mazowiecki.
Design is already well advanced for the STH airport and the railway station, including the procedure for obtaining an environmental decision at the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Warsaw. A Voluntary Acquisition Programme (VAP) was concluded at the area of Stage I of the airport investment, with over 1200 owners of real estate occupying the area of more than 3400 ha registered. This year, the STH company plans to start construction work for the KDP tunnel in Łódź and construction preparatory work - including archaeological and geological work - on the territory of the first stage of the airport, where demolition and site clearance have already been carried out for several weeks.
