42nd Anniversary of the Election of Pope John Paul II
On October 16, 1978, Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, Archbishop of Krakow, was elected the 264th successor of St. Peter and took the name John Paul II. It was the first election of a non-Italian cardinal since 1522. Today we are celebrating the 42nd anniversary of this memorable event for our country. Throughout the year 2020, which marks the 100th anniversary of his birth, we remember the life of John Paul II.
