Establishment of the Team for Selecting Candidates for the European Prosecutor

On January 31, 2024, Minister of Justice and Attorney General Adam Bodnar issued an order to establish a team for selecting candidates for the position of European Prosecutor. Poland, at the request of Minister Bodnar, is in the process of joining the European Public Prosecutor's Office.
The team will announce a recruitment process, conduct a competition (including interviews) with possible participation from non-governmental organizations and observers. The team will then select three candidates, and their names will be forwarded to the Selection Committee responsible for appointing the European Prosecutor. The Selection Committee will provide the Council of the European Union with a relevant opinion, justifying the qualifications of the candidates representing Poland.
Eligible participants in the competition include prosecutors or judges who are not retired, demonstrate unquestionable independence, possess qualifications suitable for the position of regional prosecutor, have experience in conducting proceedings related to crimes specified in the Directive of the European Parliament and Council (EU) 2017/1371 of July 5, 2017, have experience in international cooperation in criminal justice, and are proficient in the official language of the European Prosecutor's Office.
The team will also assess the candidate's academic achievements and verify information regarding any disciplinary proceedings against the candidate.
The team members include a retired prosecutor appointed by the Minister of Justice (as the Chairperson of the Team), a representative of the Minister for European Union Affairs, a representative of the National Prosecutor, a representative of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration, three individuals with undisputed authority in the field of legal sciences or law application (designated by the Team Chairperson), and the Director or Deputy Director of the Department of European Law at the Ministry of Justice (as the Secretary, without voting rights).
The Minister of Justice will announce the candidate recruitment in the Public Information Bulletin of the Ministry.
