Fundamental Rights Forum in Vienna
12.03.2024
Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar took part in a forum organized by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA).
The topic of the discussion (organized on March 11, 2024 from Vienna in an online format) at the initiative of the Agency was the protection of democracy and civic space, as well as issues related to free and fair elections. In this context, the phenomena of disinformation, media manipulation and fake news were also discussed. Combating them is a major challenge that the entire European Union must face.
"The topics discussed here are extremely important, considering that the elections to the European Parliament will be held soon. Propaganda, hate speech, fake news and other manipulation techniques are a serious threat to freedom of choice and democracy," said Minister Adam Bodnar. "The solution is not only to counteract such phenomena, but also to introduce legal regulations that will prevent them in the public space," added the head of the Polish Ministry of Justice.
The forum was also attended by Alma Zadić (Minister of Justice of Austria), Matteo Mecacci (Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights), Massimo Tommasoli (from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance), and Anna Walczak (co-founder of the Our Rule of Law foundation).
The Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) based in Vienna is an institution operating under the EU. It was established on March 1, 2007 to provide institutions and Member States of the European Union with access to independent assistance and expertise in the field of fundamental rights. FRA's activities include surveys, reports, and expert assistance to EU bodies, Member States, and candidate countries.
