On Wednesday (June 12, 2024), a special ceremony took place at the Ministry of Justice. Iver Ørstavik, a Norwegian human rights activist, received the Badge of Honor for Merits to the Administration of Justice from Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar.

The ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister of Justice Zuzanna Rudzińska-Bluszcz, Norwegian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Marta Varteressian, and Norwegian Ambassador to Poland Øystein Bø, along with representatives from Polish NGOs and academia.

The Badge of Honor for Merits in the Field of Justice is awarded for contributions to strengthening the principles of a democratic state, shaping legal culture, and ensuring the proper functioning of the justice system. It is granted by the Minister of Justice, either on their own initiative or at the request of other institutions.

Iver Ørstavik, a philosopher and university lecturer, is a well-known activist with the Rafto Foundation for Human Rights and has been involved in the fight for the rule of law and human rights. Rafto Foundation promotes democracy, the rule of law, freedom of political expression, and entrepreneurship, and undertakes various educational and informational projects. In recent years, Rafto Foundation has also monitored issues related to the rule of law and human rights in Poland.

Minister Adam Bodnar highlighted Ørstavik's unwavering commitment to justice, democracy, and human rights. His active engagement in the collaboration between Norwegian and Polish NGOs to promote the rule of law and build civil society deserves special recognition. Ørstavik's activities are also well-known within the European Union, the Council of Europe, and international judicial associations in Europe.

Following the ceremony, a roundtable discussion was held with the Norwegian delegation and representatives of Polish NGOs. The main topic was the efforts of the Minister of Justice and Prosecutor General to rebuild the rule of law and constitutional order in Poland over the past six months.
