Meeting of the Minister of Justice with the Ombudsman of the Kingdom of the Netherlands

At the Ministry headquarters, Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar met with Reinier van Zutphen, the Ombudsman of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, who has held this position since 2015.

The discussions included the roles of ombudsmen in democratic countries. Minister Bodnar, who served as Poland's Ombudsman from 2015 to 2021, shared his experiences. Both parties agreed on the importance of strengthening the role and impact of ombudsmen in Europe and expressed support for initiatives by the current Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights, Michael O’Flaherty.

Reinier van Zutphen highlighted current political and social issues in the Netherlands, including challenges faced by the Ombudsman due to the significant influx of migrants and rising aggression. Minister Bodnar outlined Poland's efforts to strengthen the rule of law and restore constitutional order, despite political and legal constraints. Van Zutphen praised Poland's reform efforts and acknowledged the urgency of these reforms to uphold democratic values.
