On February 26, 2024, Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar and Deputy Minister Krzysztof Śmiszek met with OSCE ODIHR Director Matteo Mecacci. The main topic of the meeting was the possibilities of cooperation between the Ministry of Justice and the ODIHR Office and support of this institution in the process of restoring the rule of law in Poland.
Minister Bodnar informed Matteo Mecacci that in matters of the rule of law, legislative work carried out on his order is aimed at implementing the judgments of the Tribunal, and in cases that are pending, the Ministry of Justice is reviewing and revising its positions. The Ministry has also taken actions related to the protection of human rights – including complaints from people of the LGBT+ community and matters concerning refugees and the crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border.
The Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights expressed his appreciation for these steps. Mateo Mecacci assured the support of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe for the further actions of the Polish government, which will aim at full respect for the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
The talks also covered the OSCE report on the 2023 parliamentary elections in Poland, issues related to the penitentiary system, mechanisms of accountability for war crimes in the context of the war in Ukraine, and the possibility of supporting the training of Polish judges and prosecutors in international standards by ODIHR experts.
