"The status of judges appointed on the basis of the recommendations of the current National Council of the Judiciary should be regulated by a separate law," said Polish Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar during today's (May 20) speech in Brussels.

The head of the Ministry of Justice delivered the inaugural speech at a seminar titled "From the Deterioration of the Rule of Law to Setting a Good Example", organized by the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Poland to the EU. The meeting is related to Tuesday's meeting of EU ministers, who will deal with the matter of closing the procedure under Article 7 of the EU Treaty against Poland.

As Minister Adam Bodnar noted, it is not only about restoring the rule of law, but also about maintaining the stability of the Polish judiciary. The basis for closing the procedure under Article 7 is a nine-point Action Plan, which will be implemented by Poland in the next few months.

The head of the Ministry of Justice emphasized that the main point of contention with President Andrzej Duda is the status of the so-called neo-judges. Minister Adam Bodnar assessed that the status of judges elected on the basis of the recommendation of the National Council of the Judiciary after February 2018 should be regulated on the basis of a separate law.

Minister Adam Bodnar also participated in a panel discussion in Brussels titled "A bird's eye view of the latest progress made by Poland". The debate was attended by Judge Joanna Hetnarowicz-Sikora, member of the Board of the Association of Polish Judges "IUSTITIA", Paulina Kieszkowska-Knapik, legal advisor from the "Free Courts" Foundation, and Małgorzata Szuleka, legal advisor and member of the board of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights.
