Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar met with the Ambassador of Mexico, Juan Sandoval Mendiolea
16.07.2024
During the meeting with the Ambassador of Mexico in Poland, Juan Sandoval Mendiolea, Minister Adam Bodnar emphasized the value of Polish-Mexican cooperation in criminal matters. Both countries cooperate based on the Council of Europe Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons.
A bilateral Polish-Mexican agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters may soon be signed. Additionally, work is ongoing on a bilateral extradition treaty. Effective agreements between our countries in this area are crucial to preventing impunity for criminals. As a G-20 member, Mexico is one of Poland's most important partners in Latin America and the second-largest trading partner in the Americas after the USA.
During the meeting on July 15, 2024, the progress of work on agreements regarding cooperation in criminal matters and extradition was discussed, as well as ongoing investigations in Poland concerning potential human trafficking cases.
In the UN, work is ongoing to prevent and punish crimes against humanity. Poland advocates for including a specific provision on child rights protection in the draft of the future international treaty on this issue. This proposal stems from the belief that every child, due to their physical and mental maturity level, needs special safeguards and legal protection. Minister Adam Bodnar highlighted that Poland is grateful to Mexico for supporting the Polish initiative on this matter.
Poland, like other EU member states, appreciates Mexico's engagement in the UN's efforts to prevent and punish crimes against humanity, especially the Mexican project of this year's resolution on this issue.
