Deputy Minister Maria Ejchart emphasized the goal of reducing bureaucracy, improving the safety and well-being of prison and probation service officers, and creating better conditions for the rehabilitation of prisoners.

The success of Lithuania's penitentiary reform is partly due to long-term international cooperation with prison and probation experts. This international cooperation and learning from other countries' experiences are shared priorities for the leadership of the Polish Ministry of Justice.

Deputy Minister Maria Ejchart also visited the prison and transitional house in Kaunas.

During her visit to Lithuania, Deputy Minister Maria Ejchart spoke about the organization and functioning of the Electronic Monitoring System in Poland. The use of the Electronic Monitoring System is an effective way to rationally reduce the prison population. It allows convicts to fulfill their life, professional, and social roles while eliminating the negative effects of prison demoralization. The use of the Electronic Monitoring System results in significantly lower costs for serving sentences by convicts.

The Polish and Lithuanian Prison Services have long-standing cooperation with the Norwegian Correctional Service. Both countries implement projects funded by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism.

Lithuania has introduced a new institution inspired by Norwegian solutions – transitional houses – into its prison system. The Central Prison Service Administration plans to open transitional houses in Poland this autumn.

During her one-day visit, Deputy Minister of Justice Maria Ejchart met in Vilnius with Lithuanian Minister of Justice Ewelina Dobrowolska, Polish Ambassador to Vilnius Konstanty Radziwiłł, and laid a wreath at the Rasos Cemetery.
