In September 2020 Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Wojciech Załuski as an Apostolic Nuncio to Malaysia and East Timor and as well as an Apostolic Delegate to Brunei Darussalam. Archbishop Wojciech Załuski served as the Apostolic Nuncio in Burundi from 2014; previously he held various positions in Asia, incl. in the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

The talks on establishing diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Malaysia were initiated as early as 2002 during the meeting of Pope John Paul II with the Prime Minister of Malaysia at the time, Mahathir Mohamad. The diplomatic relations was formally established in 2011. The structure of the Roman Catholic Church in Malaysia consists of 3 archdioceses: Kuala Lumpur, Kuching (Borneo) and Kota Kinabalu (Borneo) divided into 9 dioceses. It is estimated that there are about 2.6 million Christians in Malaysia, of which about 1 million are Roman Catholic, living mainly in the states of Sabah and Sarawak on the Island of Borneo.

We wish the new Nuncio a fruitful service.
