Birth Centenary of Wisława Szymborska
30.06.2023
On Friday 30th of June at the Valletta Design Cluster poetry lovers in Malta celebrated the 100th birth anniversary of Wisława Szymborska - the First Lady of Polish poetry.
100 years ago, on 2nd of July Wisława Szymborska -poetess, Nobel laureate in literature (1996) was born.
Her work exudes wisdom, brilliance and a unique sense of humour. She used to say: 'Whenever I write, I feel as if someone was standing behind me and making clownish faces. That is why I am very careful and avoid big words as much as I can".
Embassy of the Republic of Poland together with Inizjamed organized the event commemorating the First Lady of Polish poetry.
After screening of the documentary film about Szymborska "Life is Bearable at Times..." by Katarzyna Kolenda-Zaleska, our special guests - Antoine Cassar, Glen Calleja, Adrian Grima, Monika M. Maslowska, and Immanuel Mifsud shared with us their opinions about Szymborska and her poetry. The discussion was moderated by Claudia Gauci.
All participants of the event received "a birthday present" - the poetry book "Moment"/"Waqt" translated by Antoine Cassar into Maltese and published by Faraxa Publishing.
We are very happy that poetry lovers in Malta can finally enjoy reading Wisława Szymborska's poems in Maltese. We hope you will like it.
