Minister Zbigniew Rau visits Malta
21.04.2023
On 21st of April this year, Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau visited the Republic of Malta. During the visit, Minister Zbigniew Rau held political consultations with Ian Borg, Malta’s Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade. Both ministers took part in the opening ceremony of the new Polish Embassy’s headquarters on Malta, along with many representatives of the diplomatic corps.
Furthermore, the top diplomats discussed the overall political relations between the two countries and items on current international agenda. An important part of the talks focused on Malta’s taking over non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council in 2023. The heads of Polish and Maltese diplomacy agreed that Russia’s attack on Ukraine and the crisis it provoked is a fundamental security threat. Poland and Malta are also interested in a strong European Partnership Policy in its Eastern and Southern dimension as well as in resolving the problem of illegal migration to the European Union – a challenge to all EU countries, no matter their geographical location.
Minister Zbigniew Rau also paid a courtesy visit to President of the Republic of Malta George Vella.
Once the political talks were over, the head of Polish diplomacy laid a wreath of flowers under the plaque commemorating 13 Polish sailors of the destroyer escort “ORP Kujawiak” which sank off the coast of Malta during the Second World War.
