Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise was initially planned as an exercise linked to the main DEFENDER-Europe 20 exercise, which was designed as a deployment exercise to build strategic readiness in support of the U.S. National Defense Strategy and NATO deterrence objectives. In response to COVID-19, DEFENDER-Europe 20 was modified in size and scope and from 5 to 19 June around 6 000 Polish and American soldiers cooperated during Allied Spirit exercise also at Drawsko Pomorskie Training Area in Poland.
The exercise has three main objectives: 1) a Dynamic Force Employment of a U.S. Army unit to Poland, 2) the drawing and fielding of equipment from Army Prepositioned Stock and 3) the execution of a battalion-level combined live-fire exercise. The equipment, consisting of approximately 55 Abrams tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles, was originally moved out of Army Pre-positioned Stock sites in Germany and Belgium in February and moved to Bergen-Hohne Training Area, Germany, as part of the original DEFENDER-Europe 20 exercise. The equipment will move to Drawsko Pomorskie Training Area, Poland, for the modified exercise.
