Intensifying Weimar Triangle cooperation

24.06.2024

Common excercises of the three countries’ armies from 2025, expanding the mobility initiative by France as well as continued, more effective support for Ukraine were the core topics and conclusions of today’s talks between the defence ministers of the Weimar Triangle.

On June 24th, 2024, in Paris, deputy prime minister – minister of national defence Władysław Kosiniak – Kamysz participated in a meeting of defence ministers of the Weimar Triangle countries.

Defence ministers of Poland, France and Germany have decided that from 2025 Poland will be hosting common excercises of the Weimar Triangle countries’ Armed Forces.

„Regarding our cooperation, we have reached three core conclusions. First, to host common Polish-German-French military excercises in Poland next year. Common excercises of the Weimar Triangle’s Armed Forces in 2025 are becoming reality, and they will be hosted in Poland. (…) Another conclusion is our common initiative of expanding the actions concerned with increasing mobility. The mobility initiative signed by Poland, Germany and the Netherlands, expanded by observer states like Belgium, will increase its potential by the declaration of joining by France, for which we are very grateful. There is no effective defence today without mobility. (…) Support for Ukraine is the third common conclusion of our countries. Ukrainian Western aspirations are natural, and we support the efforts of Ukraine to join the European Union and NATO. For it to be possible and factual, Ukraine has to succeed. It has to be strong now, it has to achieve victories in its fight. We will support it by equipment donations and all the actions agreed upon bilaterally.”

- deputy prime minister W. Kosiniak-Kamysz noted after the meeting.

The minister of national defence has also spoken of the Weimar Triangle defence ministers conclusions in connection with the upcoming North Atlantic Alliance summit in Washington, D.C.

„With regards to the matter of preparations for the NATO summit and what we can achieve together, reaching the 2% commitment is beyond debate. Poland commits around 4% of its GDP to defence. We are in our particular situation, in our particular position. The situation on the eastern border of Poland, its border with Belarus, is being discussed because it is the eastern border of both the European Union and NATO. It is our common responsibility. 2% is the minimum that we are fulfilling right here and now. But it is a commitment that other countries have to fulfil as well. This is our allied commitment that cannot be negotiated and if someone had agreed to it during the latest summits, then they have to meet it.”

- the minister of national defence stressed.

The cooperation of Warsaw, Berlin and Paris in the format of the Weimar Triangle, renewed after nearly 10 years, is also aimed at strengthening the common support for Ukraine, creating a defence and deterrence strategy on Europe’s eastern flank and discussing potential threats from hybrid attacks outside of Ukrainian territory.
