Lieutenant General Dariusz Parylak is the current commander of the Multinational Corps Northeast

21.11.2024

- It is a great moment marking the culmination of 25 years of the Multinational Corps Northeast' presence in Szczecin with a change of command. This serves as an exemplar of the Corps' capacity for continuity, stability, and functionality. It is noteworthy that, following a quarter of a century of the Corps' presence in Szczecin, we are witnessing another change of command, which symbolises the continuity of the Corps. Freedom needs strength. It will not be able to defend itself. It is a highly valuable concept, but in the context of daily threats, it requires a unified determination and courage. For 75 years, NATO has constituted the most robust defence alliance in history. It safeguards peace, security and our civilisation - stated Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz during a visit to the Headquarters of the Multinational Corps Northeast.

On Thursday, 21 November, a ceremonial handover of duties to the Commander of the Multinational Corps Northeast (MNC NE) was conducted in Szczecin. The event was attended by the head of the Ministry of Defence and soldiers of the Polish Army and allied forces. Lieutenant General Dariusz Parylak assumed the role of commander, the role previously held by General Jürgen-Joachim von Sandrart.

For 25 years, Szczecin has been a significant point on the map of NATO and other allied cities. It is a centre where disparate formations cooperate, ensuring the efficacy of the alliance. The final three years of General Jürgen-Joachim von Sandrart's tenure have been characterised by a series of significant challenges, including the outbreak of a full-scale war in Ukraine and a rise in aggression that has posed threats to human rights, freedom and our civilisation. At that time, the presence of allied troops in Poland and on NATO's eastern flank also increased, with approximately 10,000 soldiers carrying out a variety of missions on the territory of our country

- stressed the Deputy Prime Minister.

Following the colours handover ceremony, the outgoing commander, Lieutenant General Jürgen-Joachim von Sandrart, provided a summary of the Corps' activities to date and emphasised its contribution to regional security. In turn, the new Corps commander, Lieutenant General Dariusz Parylak, pledged to further reinforce international collaboration for the security of NATO's eastern flank and the Corps' operational readiness.

Deputy Prime Minister W. Kosiniak-Kamysz, extended gratitude to General Parylak for assuming the role of Corps Commander in Szczecin.

Today, a distinguished military leader, an exemplary commander and an experienced soldier, born in Szczecin, raised on this soil and profoundly connected with it, assumes command of the Corps. He assumes a leadership role that is particularly important in the current challenging circumstances. Poland is handing over one of the most capable and qualified commanders it has - an experienced, responsible, and meticulously prepared officer. He is a man who harbours a profound affection for his homeland, yet through this sentiment also serves the alliance, working for peace and security. Lieutenant General Dariusz Parylak is the leader we need. He is a commander with considerable experience and a readiness to assume responsibility

- the Deputy Prime Minister pointed out.

The Multinational Corps Northeast plays a pivotal role within the NATO Force Structure, serving as a rapid reaction combat corps.  The Multinational Corps Northeast Headquarters represents the pinnacle of NATO command in the eastern sector of the Alliance. The Corps is led on a rotating basis by generals from Germany and Poland for three-year terms. It is responsible for NATO land forces located on the so-called eastern flank, namely in Poland, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia.

Furthermore, the Corps remains on standby to command NATO's Rapid Response Force, should it be deployed in the region. This enables the Corps to assume responsibility for the conduct of all Alliance land operations in north-eastern Europe.
