NATO will continue supporting Ukraine

16.03.2022

“There is no consent of the North Atlantic Alliance to the situation in Ukraine. In this regard, we discussed the steps that should be taken to stop the Russian invasion. For my part, I presented the project that Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński spoke about yesterday during his visit to Kiev. I presented this project for the allies to consider whether and how a peace mission in Ukraine could be formulated. Let me remind you that such a mission is conducted in Kosovo. Of course, it is not easy, this matter will be discussed, but it has been put on the table” - said Minister Mariusz Błaszczak after the meeting of NATO defence ministers.

On Wednesday, March the 16th,  the head of the Ministry of National Defence attended the meeting of NATO defence ministers, which took place at the North Atlantic Alliance Headquarters in Brussels.

“There is unity among the allies, among the entire North Atlantic Alliance, as to the assessment of the situation regarding the assessment of Russian aggression against Ukraine. This unity also concerns the assessment that Belarus is taking part in this aggression by allowing Ukrainian cities be shelled from its territory. Today we could hear that NATO speaks with one voice when it comes to supporting Ukraine "

- emphasized the head of the Ministry of National Defence at NATO Headquarters.

The meeting focused on the situation in the Eastern part of Europe in the face of Russia's aggression against Ukraine and its consequences for Euro-Atlantic security.

The head of the Ministry of National Defence participated in two sessions of the North Atlantic Council. The first was held with the participation of the Alliance's partners: Ukraine, Georgia, Finland, Sweden and the European Union, and was devoted to the current security situation and support for Ukraine.

The second session was held among thirty allies and concerned NATO adaptation in the field of deterrence and defence.

“It was a preparation for the Madrid summit in June this year. We discussed the document presented by the NATO Secretary General. We're still working on it. I hope he will be welcomed by the leaders of NATO countries. We are focusing on strengthening NATO's Eastern flank, this is also a need that Poland clearly formulates. Therefore, to deter the aggressor, to ensure the security of the North Atlantic Alliance "

- said the minister summarizing the second session of defence ministers.

During his visit to Brussels, Minister Błaszczak held bilateral meetings with the heads of defence ministries of other countries, including France, Canada, Lithuania and Denmark. The head of the Ministry of National Defence also talked to the NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, and the US Secretary of Defence, Lloyd Austin.

“I also had the opportunity to meet the Lithuanian minister, and in a wider group we talked with the defence minister of the Netherlands, Norway and Denmark. I also spoke to the Minister of Defence of Spain, but also to the US Secretary of Defence and the NATO Secretary General. In a short conversation, we exchanged our opinion on the situation in Ukraine"

- said the head of the Ministry of National Defence.

The head of the Ministry of National Defence emphasized that Poland will continue supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.

“Our position on this matter is known and unambiguous. Ukraine should be supported because it is our neighbour. Twenty kilometres from the Polish border, bombs fell on the training center in Jaworów. On Sunday I spoke about it during my speech, so we have a war on the borders of Poland. Our task is to support neighbours affected by Russian aggression. Sanctions against Russia should be as severe as possible"

- he said.
