Observation satellites will strengthen the reconnaissance capabilities of the Polish Armed Forces

27.12.2022

“Thank you for our talks, which, with no doubt, were extremely interesting, and which testify to close Polish-French relations - both in bilateral contact as well as within the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Today, we had the opportunity to jointly approve an agreement between the European Airbus company, its French branch, and the Armament Agency on equipping the Polish Armed Forces with two reconnaissance satellites. This is an extremely imperative capacity and an opportunity to complement everything that comes with deterrence and early warning capabilities. Both in the military and civilian dimension” - noted Deputy Prime Minister Mariusz Błaszczak after the meeting with Sébastien Lecornu, the head of the French Ministry of Defence.

On Tuesday, December 27, 2022, Deputy Prime Minister M. Błaszczak hosted the French Minister of Defense in Warsaw. During the meeting, a contract was concluded for the supply of 2 observation satellites with a receiving station in Poland. The head of the Polish Ministry of National Defense noted that the Polish side will have access to satellite imagery already after signing the contract.

“Our contract concerns the acquisition of two satellites for the Polish Armed Forces, which we will have under Polish colors until 2027. It is extremely significant that we will use the imaging now, already from the moment of signing the contract. Our agreement covers two satellites, but also a ground station where these images will be processed. Ultimately, our Polish satellites will operate as part of the French constellation, which will further increase reconnaissance capabilities.

– noted Deputy Prime Minister M. Błaszczak.

The new satellites will increase the capabilities of the Polish Armed Forces in the field of acquiring reconnaissance data based on observation satellites operating as part of the French-Polish constellation. Thanks to them, it will be possible to obtain reconnaissance data, in the field of image reconnaissance, with an accuracy of 30 cm, and operation within the constellation will allow for imaging a much larger area of the Earth than is possible in the case of one country.

“I am glad that, based on our cooperation with France, the Polish Armed Forces will gain new capabilities. They are important not only for military reasons but will also enable early warning in situations of natural disasters. This is an extremely important capability for the State Fire Service. I am happy that these capabilities are to be significantly expanded.”

- he said.

“Signing this agreement will significantly contribute to increasing the capabilities of the Polish Armed Forces in the field of reconnaissance of the situation on the battlefield. The current situation shows how important it is for each country to be independent and autonomous in its own assessment of the situation. Therefore, it is extremely important from the point of view of autonomy, but also of security. Space is becoming increasingly militarized and has an increasing impact on warfare and on how situations are recognized. That's why I assure you that we will deliver the service and equipment of excellent quality"

- noted the head of the French Ministry of Defence.

During the talks, the defense ministers raised the issues of cooperation within international formats: the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the European Union, as well as the issues of bilateral military cooperation. They also discussed the region’s security situation, with particular emphasis on support for Ukraine, which is defending itself against unprovoked Russian aggression.

“Our conversation also concerned Polish-French cooperation. We talked of support for Ukraine, which is resisting the Russian attack. We talked about what we can do together to support Ukraine.

– noted Deputy Prime Minister M. Błaszczak.
