Only close cooperation between Poland and Lithuania will ensure security in the region

“During the conversation, we raised security issues. Both our countries are suffering from hybrid attacks by the Belarusian side. Both our countries are cooperating with each other when it comes to countermeasures, when it comes to building resistance to these attacks. We exchanged experiences related to sealing the border, both - Polish and the Lithuanian-Belarusian border, "said Mariusz Błaszczak, the Minister of National Defence after the meeting with the head of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence.
On Friday, September the 17th, 2021, the head of the Ministry of National Defence hosted his counterpart, Arvydas Anušauskas, the Lithuanian Minister of Defence. The meeting was held as part of Polish-Lithuanian intergovernmental consultations chaired by the heads of governments. The talks focused on the prospects for the further development of Polish-Lithuanian military cooperation and strategic partnership, security in the region in the context of the eastern neighbourhood, the migration crisis on the border with Belarus and the threats Poland and Lithuania are facing.
“We had the opportunity to talk about this a few days ago in Latvia in Riga. We also participated in exercises of NATO troops there. We also talked about threats, about joint military exercises. About our cooperation in the format of the Multinational Division North East in Elbląg. The commander of this Division is a Polish officer, the chief of staff is a Lithuanian officer. The 15th Mechanized Brigade is affiliated to this command, also the Lithuanian brigade, so we talked about the joint exercise program, ”said the head of the Polish Ministry of Defence.
The head of the Ministry of National Defence recalled that Polish-Lithuanian military cooperation is important in the context of common threats and will be continued. “It was a good conversation. We are neighbours, together we share points of view regarding the threats we face. There are working groups. This is another joint session of governments, but we are also meeting in the format of defence ministers. The next meeting in Vilnius at the beginning of next year is in the format of the defence ministers. There, we will summarize the work of four working groups whose task is to intensify Polish-Lithuanian military cooperation, ”minister said.

Poland and Lithuania cooperate on military issues both bilaterally and within NATO. Polish and Lithuanian soldiers train together as part of the North Atlantic Alliance training. This year it was, among others, exercise "Three Swords-21" in the territory of Ukraine. It was organized by the Lithuanian-Polish-Ukrainian Brigade (LITPOLUKRBRIG), with its headquarters in Lublin. Over 1,200 soldiers, over 200 vehicles from four participating countries: Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine and the USA took part in the maneuvers.

The intergovernmental meeting confirms the Polish-Lithuanian strategic partnership. It is also an expression of solidarity with Lithuania in the face of the crisis on the borders with Belarus.
