Poland and Slovakia strengthen security cooperation

22.11.2024

- We are together in the European Union, together in NATO. We are strong partners, for which I express my sincerest gratitude. I am very pleased to be in Bratislava today, accompanied by Minister of Infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak, who is currently engaged in bilateral discussions. This is not a mere coincidence; it is the result of a strategic decision to cooperate, particularly in the field of arms production. I am particularly impressed by Slovakia's production capacity in the field of ammunition, particularly the 155mm variety, although other types are also noteworthy. The potential for growth is considerable, ranking among the largest in Europe and the world. We wish to collaborate with you in the development of the arms industry, as you represent a strategic partner in this field - stated Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz following a meeting with Slovak Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák.

Poland and Slovakia strengthen security cooperation

On 22 November of this year, an official visit of the Polish government delegation to Slovakia took place in Bratislava. The delegation included Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Minister of Infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak. The meeting forms part of an ongoing process of deepening cooperation in the field of defence and the defence industry of the Republic of Poland with the Slovak Republic.

Following the visit, Deputy Prime Minister W. Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that work would commence on an intergovernmental agreement between Poland and Slovakia on strategic cooperation in the development of the defence industry.

- We have agreed with the Prime Minister that we will prepare an intergovernmental agreement on strategic cooperation in the development of the arms industry. It is my hope that this document will be signed in the near future. I have already invited the Prime Minister to Poland. Prior to this, however, representatives of our arms companies will visit Slovakia with the objective of further strengthening this cooperation

- the Deputy Prime Minister informed.

The ministers additionally deliberated on the potential for enhancing industrial collaboration in the domain of defence, which is of paramount importance for augmenting the production capacity and innovation of the economies of both countries.

- We will do everything to ensure that Polish companies, both state-owned and private, establish the closest possible cooperation with Slovakian companies - also comprising state-owned and private entities. This is a matter of primary importance. I will oversee this matter personally to ensure that the development, exchange of experience, technology and joint initiatives, whether in the production of APC Rosomak or in the area of trade and ammunition production, benefit both parties. The principal challenge currently facing the industry is the acquisition of the capability to produce large-scale heavy calibre ammunition. It is evident that a partnership with Slovakia is a prerequisite for the attainment of this objective. I am convinced of this assertion. I am aware that you are our principal partner, for which I am grateful

- the head of the Ministry of Defence emphasised.

During the bilateral discussions, the joint efforts of Poland and Slovakia to enhance regional security and the overall eastern flank of NATO were highlighted.

- It is important to note that the cooperation between our two countries extends beyond the realm of the arms industry. It also encompasses the exchange of experience between our respective armies. Particular efficacy has been observed in the cooperation between our special forces. Furthermore, experience has been gained from the Air Policing mission, which Poland is currently undertaking over Slovakia until the end of this year. The protection of the shared values and airspace of EU member states and NATO remains our priority. We are prepared to enhance our collaboration with regard to the training of military personnel and the exchange of experience. I have invited Slovakia to participate in the Shield East initiative, which entails the construction of fortifications on the eastern flank of NATO. The Slovakian military boasts excellent engineering troops, and it would be beneficial to collaborate with them in this field

- noted the head of the Ministry of Defence.

- In regard to the activities undertaken with the Slovakian Minister of National Defence, these include cooperation within the EU and NATO, as well as support for initiatives and activities aimed at strengthening security. Poland's contribution to the modernisation of the armed forces is acknowledged, creating a favourable impression on the partners, as evidenced by today's discussions. (...) In conclusion, the measures undertaken today with our Slovak neighbours are intended to enhance the security of the eastern flank of NATO and the European Union. Furthermore, the agenda encompasses economic relations, collaborative initiatives in the arms industry, joint training of troops, and the enhancement of skills. I have received an assurance of great value: in the event of any threat, Slovakia will always stand by Poland, supporting us in every possible way. I made the same declaration on behalf of Poland

- the Minister of National Defence noted.

The official part of the Polish delegation's visit to Bratislava ended with the laying of a wreath in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
