Poland co-hosts a NATO deterrence and defence seminar

I am very pleased to have an opportunity to address such a distinguished audience at the opening of today’s seminar. This event takes place at a very timely moment. We are entering an important phase of the works on the new NATO Strategic Concept. At the Madrid's summit next year hopes and expectations of the Allies are to be translated into strategic guidance for the Alliance and its political-military activities – Minister Mariusz Błaszczak spoke to the participants of the DETERRENCE & DEFENCE seminar held in Brussels and via audio-visual links.

On Monday, December the13th, the head of the Ministry of National Defence participated in the North Atlantic Alliance seminar devoted to NATO's deterrence and defence policy in Brussels. Monday's seminar is a part of the analytical phase of the works on the new Strategic Concept of the Alliance, which is to be approved at the NATO summit in Madrid in June 2022. The co-organizer of this project is Poland, along with Great Britain and Portugal. Poland will be responsible for a detailed expertise on the requirements concerned capabilities necessary for deterrence and defence on the eastern flank.


The seminar was attended by representatives of the Permanent Representations to NATO, the ministries of defence and foreign affairs, the armed forces, as well as think-tanks, non-governmental, academic and youth organizations.


While delivering the welcome statement  during the opening of the seminar, the head of the Ministry of National Defence pointed to the fact that the new Strategy should facilitate allies further NATO adaptation,also its structures, plans, forces and capabilities to the new challenges and threats of the security landscape.


"Today NATO is facing challenges and threats from all directions. The security environment in Europe and in many other regions has become more volatile and less predictable than even a few years ago. On Eastern flank we face Russia’s struggle to expand influence and supremacy(…)We witness Moscow’s using a full spectrum of Kremlin’s assets, with purpose to destabilize international security environment"

- said the head of the Ministry of National Defence, emphasizing the threat posed by Russia, while citing examples of the Kremlin's remilitarization process and the expansionary foreign policy pursued by its authorities.


Concluding his speech, the head of the Ministry of National Defence emphasized the importance of solidarity, the indivisibility of the allied security and the military credibility of the Alliance.

"I would like to stress that the new Strategic Concept  should clearly state that NATO is politically united and militarily strong and credible in the face of the present and future security situation, in a 360-degree approach. The current security situation shows that the deterrence and defence posture is of such great importance to the Alliance. We need to find satisfactory compromise in some areas – which is obvious  - but firstly we need an open and frank flow of ideas"
