Poland in favor of continued military support for defending Ukraine

19.01.2023

"Our view is clear, simple and consistent - Ukraine should be supported and we are doing that. As we were doing even before Ukraine was invaded, and as we will continue to do. We all know very well that there are states that are truly involved in helping, and states that help only symbolically, or perhaps even only staging any help. Our task is to convince and show that only real, actual aid matters. Otherwise, we face a very grave prospect. (...) Our task is to support Ukraine and convince our Allies that such support makes sense." - Mariusz Blaszczak, Deputy Prime Minister-Minister of National Defense, said after a videoconference with defense ministers of countries supporting Ukraine.

On Thursday, January 19, took place a video conference which was participated by representatives of countries supporting Ukraine: including Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. It was attended also by the Secretary of Defense of the United Kingdom. Tomorrow, a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, which brings together more than 50 countries, including NATO Allies, will be held in Ramstein.

"Tomorrow, in Ramstein there will be another meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, which is a US-led group of countries, in a format broader than NATO only, that support Ukraine. We have no doubt that Russia is dangerous, and that Putin has decided to recreate an empire of evil. (...) We have been consistently strengthening our armed forces, since 2015, when Mr. Andrzej Duda became the president, when PiS took over the government. We are growing numbers of the Polish Armed Forces and equipping them with modern weapons. We are consistent in this course of action."

- Deputy Prime Minister M. Blaszczak pointed out.

Poland remains one of the most active donors of aid to Ukraine in both military and humanitarian terms. It is effectively soliciting to build a global coalition for the delivery of tanks needed on the Ukrainian battlefields.

"I said it at this forum, and I will repeat it tomorrow as well. I mean President Andrzej Duda's proposal regarding Poland's readiness to hand over a company of Leopard 2 tanks. But in a broader coalition of countries. Why does this coalition matter? Because no adult can have illusions that a company of tanks will cause the war to be won. Ukraine should be supported by the transfer of tanks in the strength of at least a brigade, and perhaps more. Therefore, this coalition of countries is necessary to realistically support Ukraine. I'm counting on the fact that especially our western neighbor Germany, which is the manufacturer of Leopards, which also has these tanks and the capabilities related to their maintenance and servicing, will change its mind and join this coalition."

- said the head of the Ministry of Defense, referring to Poland's proposal to transfer a company of Leopard 2 tanks as part of a broader international coalition.
