Poland strengthens Allied defense capabilities. New facilities for the mobile air base system are being built in Powidz
“This is another meeting with concrete results - the initiation of new investment. These facilities are intended for the United States Air Force. Namely, Combat Aviation Brigade equipped with Apaches, and stationed here in Powidz"- said Mariusz Błaszczak, Deputy Prime Minister-Minister of National Defense during his visit to Powidz.
On November 7, the head of the Ministry of National Defense visited the 3rd Transport Aviation Wing in Powidz. Deputy Prime Minister announced the commencement of new investments stipulated in the Polish-American Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA). As part of the investment, the mobile system of the air base and fuel storage facilities are to be built. The implementation of the investment will enhance the conditions required for conducting and securing air operations of Polish and Allied air forces.
“In June, with Ambassador Mark Brzeziński, we started building an ammunition depot here in Powidz. Arguably, the base in Powidz is a military complex well-prepared to support Polish and Allied forces on the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Alliance. Our activities follow the letter of the contract signed on August 15, 2020. (...) Since then, we have started many investments, including this one. We are grateful for the Polish-American cooperation and its intense development. One of the most significant events in the history of this cooperation was President Joe Biden's decision for the Forward Element of the US Army V Corps’ Command to be permanently stationed in Poland"
- emphasized Deputy Prime Minister.
The American side is implementing several projects on the territory of Poland in order to expand the potential of the Allied Strengthening Forces.
The main infrastructural and logistic plans include the construction of Deployable Airbase Systems (DABS) and Bulk Fuel Storage (BFS) in Powidz. Effectively, the EDCA agreement develops conditions for a permanent, long-term presence of the US Armed Forces on Polish soil, and thus strengthens the security and defense potential. It provides for a total of 114 infrastructure projects in 11 locations agreed on by both parties. Investments will serve to expand the national defense potential and create facilities that will be co-shared by the Polish Armed Forces.
During his visit to Powidz, the head of the Ministry of National Defense emphasized that negotiations on the contract for strike helicopters for the Polish Armed Forces continue.
“One week ago, I had a phone call with my American counterpart, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. We talked about strengthening Polish-American military relations. As part of this endeavor, Abrams tanks will arrive in Poland next year. Now, we discuss the procurement of 96 Apache strike helicopters for the Polish Armed Forces. We also discuss filling the capacity gap. I hope that, as with the Abrams tanks, with Apaches, we will also arrive at mutually beneficial decisions”
- said the head of the Polish Ministry of Defense.
During his visit to the 3rd Transport Aviation Wing, Minister Blaszczak also met with Polish and American airmen and women and the commanding staff of the unit.
