Strategic security partnership of Poland and Sweden
20.01.2025
„Our meeting is a very important event in european and global politics. I believe that the world, Poland, Sweden – all of us will rise to the challenge not just through increased spending, cooperation of our industries, shared training, being joned in alliances, but also through appropriate support for Ukraine, so that we can lead the world towards a just peace, a peace for future generations. This unites us – many years of cooperation with Sweden and many years of our friendship’s future” – deputy prime minister Władysław Kosiniak – Kamysz said after a meeting with the minister of defence from Sweden.
On January 20th the deputy prime minister W. Kosiniak – Kamysz paid an official visit to Sweden.
Sweden, which recently became a NATO member, styrengthens cooperation with Poland in many areas. The strategic partnership agreement signed in November 2024 has resulted in initiatives such as the Combined Task Force Baltic or the NATO mission „Baltic Sentry”, which are key for security of the Baltic Sea region.
- There are three countries that excercise command in the Baltic region. (…) It is an important initiative, which entails the creation of a new command centre. Poland is a very important partner in this. Likewise, Sweden is also crucial in this proces. We are putting into practice that which happened near the end of November – the signing of a strategic partnership agreement by our prime ministers. That i salso when a declaration was made to create a mission to defend the Baltic Sea, „Baltic Sentry”. The Baltic states, and others, are joining this mission. We are also hoping for many other accessions. We have discussed that, as well as the promoton of this mission among the other NATO members. We will also want to take up this issue at the cclosest meeting of ministers of NATO countries in Brussels. This mission on the Baltic Sea is important given the trade routes, critical infrastructure, supply chains – primarily of energy. All of that has to be properly protected
– the head of the Polish ministry of defence noted after the meeting.
The main topics of discussion with the Swedish minister of defence Pål Jonson were the cooperation of defence industries, security in the Baltic Sea and protection of critical infrastructure, among others. During their press conference, the ministers underscored the importance of cooperation within NATO and the continuation of support for Ukraine.
- All that we have discussed is tied with an increase in spending. Poland and Sweden are an example of those countries that not only meet the 2% defence spending threshold, but surpass it, showing they are stweadfast allies, with their own ideas and determination and know that without security everything is nothing. If there are those for whom security is not the most important, then Iwish to say that everything becomes nothing without security. There is no education, healthcare, economical progres without security. It is a necessity for us to increase defence spending. I am glad that Poland, Sweden, the Baltic states – these northern countries of the European Union, among which we can count ourselves in this case – meet this requirement and show how to uphold good transatlantic relations.
– deputy prime minister W. Kosiniak – Kamysz noted.
A session with representatives of both countries’ defence industries was another part of the visit. The discussions touched on shared projects and the possibility of greater support for Ukraine facing Russian aggression, among other topics.
- The cooperation of Poland and Sweden, as well as support for Ukraine are the issues that tied us together in recent years. The donations, equipment, training – we have discussed all that today during our meeting. We are ready to help Ukraine further. And nothing can be decided for Ukraine without Ukraine’s involvement. All the political discussions we hold always take into account the agency of Ukraine, its freedom and independence. It is crucial to be prepared for even the most difficult scenarios. That can only be done through coordinating all actions
– said the Polish minister of defence during the coference
As the deputy prime minister Władysław Kosiniak – Kamysz announced, the ministries of defence of both countries will soon prepare the following documents:
- The plan for bilateral military cooperation
- The list of shared initiatives for the development of the defence industries
- The plan of action for the ministeires of defence of Poland and Sweden for the years 2026 – 2027
