– PESCO is to complement the defense capabilities created by NATO. It is important to us that the opportunities created by the European Union are used for common security – said Mariusz Błaszczak, the Minister of National Defense in Luxembourg.
On Monday, Mariusz Błaszczak, the Minister of National Defense, participated in Luxembourg in a joint meeting of foreign ministers and EU defense ministers.
During the session chaired by Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the topics of EU-NATO cooperation and issues related to the upcoming Alliance Summit were discussed.
– Poland is active in both NATO and EU related programs. We care about defense, and security is a priority of our government. We do everything to ensure that relations within both NATO and the EU are as close as possible. Poland is involved in 9 PESCO programs. After two, which were announced in the preliminary trial, I submitted six and seventh was organized by France on the prevention of biochemical risks. We are active. We believe that only through the joint use of these efforts we can achieve a very good result – said Minister Blaszczak.
The head of the Ministry of National Defense said that Poland assumes that the maximum use should be made of the opportunities created within PESCO
– We attach particular importance to the military mobility program. This is important from the point of view of a rapid reaction in a crisis situation – said the minister.
The head of the Ministry of National Defense, when asked about the European Defense Initiative, indicated that it was not an initiative neither by NATO nor by the EU.
– We focus our forces and resources in the framework of NATO and the EU. We achieve real defense capabilities thanks to the synthesis of several components: thanks to the fact that the Polish Army is becoming stronger, that it is better armed and that we are NATO member. This is the key to ensuring security for Poland and Poles. The EU with its programs is a support and we have to use it. For us the most important thing is to provide real security, and this happens within NATO and within the EU – stressed the Minister.
During the visit in Luxembourg, bilateral meetings between Minister Mariusz Błaszczak and the head of the Spanish defense ministry - Margarita Robles Fernández and Italian Defense Minister - Elisabetta Trenta, also took place.
