Transatlantic cooperation

On the 14th of March 2018, the meeting of a Polish-U.S. High Level Defense Group (HLDG) has been held.

The Polish delegation was led by Deputy Minister - Under-Secretary of State Tomasz Szatkowski, the U.S. – by Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, Robert Karem.

During the meeting, T. Szatkowski and R. Karem discussed the current state and perspectives for Polish-U.S. defense cooperation, both in the bilateral and Allied dimensions. Parties presented their expectations towards July NATO Summit in Brussels and agreed to continue close cooperation aimed at further NATO adaptation to the challenges of the international environment. Under-Secretary Tomasz Szatkowski underlined Poland’s readiness to actively participate in the establishment of new Allied command structures.

R. Karem positively assessed the conditions provided by Poland for the U.S. forces stationing in Poland and positive attitude of the Polish society towards American soldiers. Parties agreed to continue talks concerning the prospects for further increase of the U.S. presence in Poland.


Threats for regional and global security were also discussed. While referring to both countries’ participation in operations and missions, the broad and valuable experience gained by Poland and U.S. due to their close cooperation in this field, was underlined. Moreover, parties adhered to key cooperation projects regarding technical modernization of the Polish Armed Forces, emphasizing the expected signing of the Patriot agreement.  


Other participants of the meeting were high rank officers of the General Staff of Polish Armed Forces, General Command of Polish Armed Forces and Operational Command of Polish Armed Forces, from the U.S. delegation – representatives from United States European Command and Joint Chiefs of Staff.
