The V4 defence cooperation as well as its prospects were the main issues discussed during the V4 Defence Ministers meeting in Budapest. The Ministry of National Defence was represented by Deputy Minister - Under-Secretary of State Mr Tomasz Szatkowski.
The representatives of the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary confirmed that their countries would focus on NATO and EU initiatives aimed at strengthening the region. They also expressed the satisfaction with the NATO Summit decisions’ implementation. It was agreed that one of the new land component command, that is to be set according to the NATO Command Structure reform, should be located in Poland. They outlined the need of further endeavours intended to meet challenges from the South, including terrorism and illegal migration.
The heads of delegations agreed to look for common projects in the framework of the EU Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) taking into account its coherence with NATO capability development (for instance the European Transport Network). Ministers confirmed that in 2019 V4 EU Battlegroup will be on standby and Croatia is invited to join the BG.
Deputy Minister Szatkowski thanked for the V4 cooperation and its practical dimension as well as expressed his hope for its further development.
On March 28 the meeting of Central European Defence Cooperation (CEDC) Defence Ministers was held. Poland has an observer status in CEDC initiative. The main topics of the discussion were the challenges from the South and the common projects within PESCO.
