Professor Józef Lubacz named first recipient of the National Institute of Telecommunications Science Award

Professor Józef Lubacz, Ph.D., D.Sc., Eng., has been named the first recipient of the Science Award from the National Institute of Telecommunications. The award statue was presented on June 10, 2024, during the 2nd "Science for Society" Congress in Warsaw.

The National Institute of Telecommunications – State Research Institute granted this inaugural Science Award, established by the Institute’s director in March 2024. Through this award, the Institute has initiated the tradition of honoring outstanding scientific achievements in engineering and technical sciences, specifically in the discipline of technical computer science and telecommunications. The award committee, upon the recommendation of the Chairman of the Scientific Council of NIT – SRI, recognized Professor Józef Lubacz, an exceptional telecommunications expert, academic, and philosopher of science and technology.

The award ceremony took place on June 10, 2024, at the 2nd "Science for Society" Congress in the auditorium of the Warsaw University of Technology. The statue, awarded for lifetime scientific contributions, was presented by the Institute’s Deputy Director, Dr. Paweł Pławiak, Eng., Prof. PK, and Dr. Janusz Zawiła-Niedźwiedzki, Eng., Prof. PW, Chairman of the NIT Scientific Council.

Professor Lubacz graduated from the Faculty of Electronics at the Warsaw University of Technology in 1971 and completed further studies in 1977 at the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics, and Mechanics of the University of Warsaw. He defended his doctoral dissertation in 1976 at the National Institute of Telecommunications.

For many years, he conducted research and teaching in telecommunications and information technology. Simultaneously, he explored humanities and social issues, including non-technical aspects of technological development and the philosophy of science, technology, and creativity.

He has published over 120 scientific papers and is the author of various technical projects and studies. He has supervised ten Ph.D. candidates and conducted research abroad in France, Canada, and Sweden. At the Warsaw University of Technology, he has held numerous prominent positions, including Head of the Department of Telecommunications and Information Technology, Dean of the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology, and Director of the Institute of Telecommunications. Since 2020, he has led the Intercollegiate Marek Dietrich Institute for Contemporary Civilization Issues.

Professor Lubacz represented Poland in the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) and served as Chairman of the Main Council of Science and Higher Education.
