On January 27, a ceremony was held at NATO Headquarters on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 77th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, co-organized by the Permanent Representations of Poland, Italy and Bulgaria to NATO. During the ceremony, the Deputy Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, Mircea Geoan, and the Permanent Representatives of Poland, Italy, Bulgaria and Israel to the North Atlantic Alliance took the floor.

Ambassador Szatkowski emphasized that Poland paid an extremely high price for resistance to Nazi Germany. Attacked by Hitler on September 1, 1939, and shortly thereafter by the Soviet army, Poland was de facto divided and occupied until the end of the war.

As a result my country suffered an unspeakable loss of its people, heritage, economy, culture and more. In the course of the war, the Nazis murdered almost 6.000.000 Poles, including 3.000.000 Jews in a deliberate and systematic genocide – reiterated Ambassador Szatkowski.

Part of the ceremony was the presentation of two exhibitions; "Drawings on the scraps of life. The Extermination of Jews in the Lublin Region in Józef Richter's Sketches ", prepared by the State Museum at Majdanek and made available by the Ghetto Fighters Museum in Israel, and an exhibition about Witold Pilecki, made available by the Pilecki Institute. Exhibitions will be presented at NATO Headquarters for 10 days.

The event was attended by permanent representatives of NATO countries, representatives of partner countries and the leadership of the North Atlantic Alliance. At the end, all the participants posed for a group photo, holding the inscriptions #WeRemember.

The commemoration ceremony was broadcast live on the Twitter account of our Delegation.
