27.01.2023

On January 27, a commemoration ceremony was held at NATO Headquarters to mark the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 78th anniversary of the liberation of Nazi German concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, co-organized by the Permanent Representations of Poland and Italy to NATO. The partners of this year's event were the World Jewish Congress and the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum.

During the ceremony, NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană and the Permanent Representatives of Poland, Italy and Israel to NATO offered their remarks.

In his speech, Ambassador Szatkowski pointed to the current situation in Ukraine:

We have a responsibility to recognize any signs that history might repeat itself. Russian aggression against Ukraine is not World War II. Amidst all the suffering on the territory of Ukraine, there was no equivalent to the Holocaust. Yet. But too much of what we saw in Bucha, Mariupol or Izium resembles what happened in Poland in the fall of 1939, he stressed.

Part of the ceremony was the presentation of an exhibition prepared especially for this event by the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum, presenting 10 figures of victims of the Holocaust, exterminated in the German Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz. The exhibition is on display at NATO Headquarters for the next week.

The event was attended by Permanent Representatives of NATO countries, representatives of partner countries and the leadership of the North Atlantic Alliance. At the end of the ceremony, all gathered posed for a group photo, holding the signs #WeRemember.

The commemoration ceremony was broadcast live on the Twitter account of the Polish Delegation.
