Meeting of the North Atlantic Council in Georgia

On October 3-4, the North Atlantic Council paid a visit to Batumi, where a series of NATO-Georgia Commission meetings took place.

The NATO-Georgia Commission was chaired by NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller and Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia. The final statement noted the progress made by Georgia in reforming the state and modernizing the armed forces. The Commission has also committed itself to updating the NATO - Georgia Package (Substantial NATO-Georgia Package, SNGP) in 2020. The decision adopted at the NATO Summit in Bucharest in 2008 regarding the prospect of Georgia's membership with NATO was also confirmed.

As part of the visit to Batumi, NATO representatives also held meetings with Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili, members of the government, including Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani, Defense Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Minister of Internal Affairs, Vakhtang Gomelauri, representatives of the Georgian Parliament and NGOs. Delegates also visited Georgian Coast Guard vessels.

Georgia is one of NATO's most important partners and a key country for the stability of the Black Sea region. Georgia is the fifth largest contributor to NATO’s Resolute Support Mission  in Afghanistan. Polish Embassy in Tibilisi acts as the NATO Contact Point Embassy in Georgia.
