Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the escalation of the situation in northeastern Syria

10.10.2019

Poland is concerned with the launch of Turkish armed forces operation in the northeastern Syria. We are afraid that this may negatively impact the stability of the region, the UN-led attempts to find a peaceful resolution to the Syrian conflict and contribute to further deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the region.

Being aware of Turkey's legitimate security interests, we hope that the ongoing operation will end as soon as possible and that the actions will be carried out in compliance with the international humanitarian law. We count also that they will not undermine the progress achieved by the Global Coalition in its fight against DAESH.

Poland has consistently underlined that any lasting solution to the conflict in Syria can only be achieved through a political process, in accordance with UNSCR 2254 and the Geneva Communiqué of 2012.
