Anna Moskwa in Wróblin nad Odrą: we have tested measures to neutralise golden algae with the participation of services and scientists, and we are introducing countermeasures
26.06.2023
On 23 June 2023, Minister of Climate and Environment Anna Moskwa met in Wróblin nad Odrą with Opole Voivode Sławomir Kłosowski and the services involved in remedial measures in the Oder River.
We continue to carry out activities aimed at neutralising golden algae. A summary report on the latest scientific research with all the algal bloom suppressants will be published by the Institute of Environmental Protection by the end of June 2023. The results are promising.
– Minister of Climate and Environment Anna Moskwa said.
At the same time, she pointed out that the Ministry, in cooperation with the services, is carrying out intensive remedial measures.
I have received a report from representatives of the State Forests on the just-completed action of installing a bio-stabiliser on the Łacha Jelcz Reservoir in the old river bed of the Oder River. I want to thank the foresters for an efficient action. Similar ones will be performed in other already designated locations. The work is being executed under the scientific supervision of the Institute of Environmental Protection (PIB)
– informed Anna Moskwa.
Bio-stabiliser installation is a 100% environmentally safe method and can be used in nature reserves and Natura 2000 areas. It is widely used to improve water quality and proves effective in the case of golden algae. Based on guidelines from scientists, the Ministry of Climate and Environment recommends the method for use in oxbow lakes with water flow. This is because barley straw releases phenols into the water, which inhibit algal blooms.
The Head of the Ministry of Climate and Environment emphasised the role of the services and the social organisations and actors involved in the actions. She thanked the Polish Armed Forces - the chemical troops, the State Fire Service and Volunteer Fire Service, the Fisheries Guards and Polish Angling Association and Regional Water Management Boards in Gliwice, as well as the Opolskie Voivode, Sławomir Kłosowski. She also emphasised the scientific nature of the activities carried out with the participation of experts from the University of Gdansk, the University of Warsaw and the Koszalin University of Technology. As the Head of the Ministry of Climate and Environment pointed out, the neutralisation of the 'golden algae' was and is taking place under strict scientific supervision. At the same time, continuous monitoring of the Oder River continues.
The Minister expressed gratitude to the representatives of the Institute of Environmental Protection (PIB) and the General Directorate of Environmental Protection, experts from the Institute of Engineering and Environmental Protection of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn and the Inland Fisheries Institute (PIB). Anna Moskwa also thanked the staff of the regional Directorates of Environmental Protection, the Voivodeship Inspectorates of Environmental Protection and the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection.
