Oder golden algae thrive mainly in oxbow lakes in 2023
03.06.2023
The rapid growth of golden algae and fish die-offs in spring 2023 was found in the reservoir in Januszkowice, Czernica and Łacha Jelcz. Outside these locations, no die-offs were caused by a toxic golden alga bloom this year. The invasive algae thrive mainly in oxbow lakes, away from industrial areas, where the water salinity remains at 750-900 µS/cm and does not exceed 1100 µS/cm.
The Central Laboratory of the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection has extended continuous monitoring of the Oder River to include oxbow lakes. It is carried out at 36 measurement and control points, and the physicochemical parameters of the water and the presence of golden algae are analysed. In the event of the introduction of a warning or alert level, the relevant services are notified within one hour under the applicable procedure of the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection (GIOŚ).
