Visit to Sebastia and Burqa
26.05.2023
Poland, together with the EU, like-minded diplomatic missions and human rights organisations, visited the endangered Palestinian towns of Sebastia and Burqa
This week, together with the European Union Delegation, some diplomatic missions of European Union Member States and human rights organisations, we visited Sebastia and Burqa in the north of Palestine. The residents of these villages are deeply concerned about recent developments.
In Sebastia, the occupation authorities are planning to create an archaeological park under the Israeli administration, which could effectively cut off the oldest part of the town, dating back to Roman times, from its current inhabitants. The nearby Palestinian village of Burqa, on the other hand, is adjacent to the controversial Israeli settlement of Homesh, built mostly on land belonging to the village's Palestinian inhabitants.
Shortly after our visit, Burqa residents were the victims of a brutal attack by violent settlers. The Jerusalem Delegation of the European Union issued a condemnatory statement on the matter, which reads:
„Appalled by the settlers attacks against Palestinians in Burqa and Al Mughayyer villages, resulting in injuries and destruction of Palestinian homes. UN data shows a trend of increasing and more violent settler attacks against Palestinians in the oPt. The EU condemns settler violence and calls on Israel to take decisive steps to ensure accountability and protect the Palestinian civilian population in line with its obligations under international law.”.
