Emergency food parcels for those in need
19.01.2024
As part of the Polish humanitarian aid project, the Order of Malta Medical Service prepared and provided over 12,000 emergency food parcels to people in need in Ukraine.
Help was provided to the disabled, people in crisis, internal refugees, large families, and residents of liberated and frontline areas. The parcels were delivered to 80 towns in 10 regions of Ukraine. Each of them contained long shelf life foods sufficient for the survival of a family of three for one week. Nearly 320,000 bags and cans weighing approximately 187 tons in total were transferred over three months. The first batches from Poland arrived at the warehouse in Ukraine in the first half of October 2023.
The food was delivered to a warehouse near Ivano-Frankivsk, where a group of 26 volunteers were involved in the process of preparing food parcels. Each 12-kilogram package contained, among others: flour, sugar, salt, canned food, pasta, oil, jam and tea. The distribution of ready-made parcels was organized by a network of branches of the Maltese aid service and partner organizations such as Caritas. Additionally, larger transports were organized to selected cities, including Kherson. By the end of December, all parcels were delivered to those in need.
The donated food was not only a help in surviving another war winter, but also a material sign of Polish solidarity with the Ukrainian nation.
