Honoring the Polish legionnaires buried in Berbești

On June 23rd, there was a ceremony of laying wreaths at the tombstone of Polish legionnaires who gave their lives in the fight against the Kuban Cossack troops at Berbești in October 1914, displacing Russian troops from the then Máramaros County.
The ceremony was held in the presence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Romania Maciej Lang, the President of Maramures County Council Ionel Bogdan, Prefect of the Maramures County Vlad Dures and Mayor of the Giulești Commune Laurenciu Batin - on whose territory Berbești is currently located.
The guardian of the memory of the Polish liberators of the region is Laurenciu Batin, decorated for his activities with the Medal of the Minister of Culture, National Heritage and Sport “Guardian of National Memorial Sites”.
Soldiers of the Polish Military Contingent stationed in Craiova and soldiers of Romanian troops from the Maramures region also participated in the ceremony.
After the national anthems were played, wreaths were solemnly laid on the grave of the legionnaires, the appeal of the fallen was read and a volley of honor was fired.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Maciej Lang was awarded the medal “Nicolae Steinhardt".
