19.03.2021

On Friday, March 19, the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland, Maciej Lang, officially presented to dr. Laurenţiu Batin the medal of the Minister of Culture, National Heritage and Sport “Guardian of National Memorial Sites”.

Medal

Dr. Laurentiu Batin was for a long time the commander of the Border Guard Department, and since 2016 he has been the Mayor of the Giuleşti commune. Dr. Batin is passionate about history and he is a chronicler of the Maramures County region. He commemorated, among others, six Polish soldiers of the 2nd Brigade of the Polish Legions killed in the village of Berbeşti on October 6, 1914 in the fight against the Cossack unit in the service of Tsarist Russia. Thanks to his efforts, an original wooden monument in the form of a cross-chapel in the regional Marmares style was exposed on the grave of the legionnaires. In 2018, Dr. Batin also contributed to the placement of a commemorative board in the courtyard of the former prison in Sighetu Marmatiei, where Polish legionnaires were detained in 1918.
