Exhibition of Wawel Royal Castle Tapestries
31.08.2021
The entire collection of 137 royal tapestries from the collection of Zygmunt August called “All of the King’s Tapestries: Homecomings 2021–1961–192” is displayed at the Wawel Royal Castle.
The collection of the Polish king Zygmunt August, is the largest source of this type in Europe and a symbol of the Jagiellonian golden age. The works were created in the years 1550-1560 in Brussels. The exhibition is accompanied by the works of two outstanding contemporary artists: Mirosław Bałka and Marcin Maciejowski. Hidden, firstly from the Swedes, then from the Germans in 1939. Evacuated through England to Canada, the tapestries returned to Poland in 1961.
The exhibition evokes the atmosphere of the Renaissance castle, splendidly bedecked with tapestries. It also tells the story of the tremendous work performed by generations of conservators grappling with the effects of the damage and destruction visited upon the tapestries during their turbulent history. Many people (including Polish diplomats) took part in saving the tapestries during World War II.
The exhibition “All of the King’s Tapestries: Homecomings 2021–1961–192” will be open at the Wawel Royal Castle until October 31, 2021.
