Purchase of food for famine-stricken Yemen

09.05.2021

Poland continues to support people affected by the humanitarian crisis. The National Coordinator for Development Cooperation, Minister Paweł Jabłoński, decided to make a voluntary contribution to the activities of the World Food Program in Yemen.

World Food Programme

The world's most pressing humanitarian problem today is the problem of hunger. The drastic reduction in the level of food security in the world is one of the most severe socioeconomic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In March 2021, a call was made to all Member States of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Program (WFP) for financial support to combat hunger. WFP estimates that currently, in 79 countries where the organization operates and where data is available, approximately 270 million people suffer from malnutrition, and 34 million people require immediate assistance.

Yemen is a country affected by the world's worst humanitarian crisis. The civil war disrupted the lives of millions of people there, causing widespread losses, mass displacements and starvation. Despite the efforts of the international community, the situation in the country continues to deteriorate, and the threat of the enormous scale of hunger is currently the greatest in recent years. According to UN estimates, this year hunger may affect more than 16 million people, and 50,000 is already on the verge of starvation.

Poland, in response to the appeal and continuing support for the countries of the Middle East, which are the priority area of Polish aid activities, decided to make a voluntary contribution of PLN 1 million to the WFP for activities in Yemen enabling the provision of special food with appropriate nutritional content for children up to 5 years of age, pregnant women and nursing mothers.

Supporting women and children, as groups requiring special care and support, is one of the key tasks of Polish humanitarian aid, which has been intensively developed since the non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council.

Poland's cooperation with WFP is strengthened through regular financial support to fight malnutrition and hunger. It has acquired an additional dimension since the appointment of the Permanent Representative of Poland to the United Nations in Rome as a member of the Presidium of the WFP Governing Council.
