75th anniversary of the liberation of the German concentration camps located in then-Nazi Germany

22.04.2020

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Allied forces liberating concentration camps located in the territory of then-German Reich. Poland remembers and pays tribute to the victims of the Nazi Germany crimes against Poles, Jews and representatives of other nationalities. Those crimes were committed, among others, in the Sachsenhausen, Dachau, Ravensbrück and Mauthausen-Gusen camps.

Concentration camps in Nazi Germany – among them Sachsenhausen, Dachau, Ravensbrück and Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp located in the territory of Austria annexed in 1938 – were the places of executions for Poles, Jews and representatives of other nationalities. On 27 January 2020 during the commemorative ceremony of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp Auschwitz-Birkenau the President of the Republic of Poland, Mr. Andrzej Duda said: It is hard to encompass it all with your mind. The magnitude of the crime perpetrated here is terrifying. But we must not look away from it. We must never forget it.

The need to protect the memory and the truth about what happened in the German Nazi concentration camps is especially important now - in April and May – as we commemorate the liberation of concentration camps – among them Sachsenhausen, Dachau, Ravensbrück and Mauthausen-Gusen. Once again let us refer to the words of President Andrzej Duda uttered on 27 January 2020 at the premises of the former German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp Auschwitz-Birkenau: Let this be our joint commitment, made in the face of the last Survivors and Witnesses: carry further the message and warning to all humanity that flow from here.
