Poland in the UN

On the occasion of Poland's assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Poland to the United Nations Office at Geneva organised a meeting for the Ambassadors of the Member States of the European Union, as well as for the Ambassador and representatives of the local EU Delegation, during which the Head of the Mission, Chargé d'affaires ad interim Mirosław Broiło, presented the priorities of the Polish Presidency. A special poster depicting the objectives of the Permanent Representation was also presented.

Following the attacks on the UN Interim Force base in Lebanon, a group of countries participating in the mission issued on October 12, 2024 in New York a joint statement upon Polish initiative. As many as 44 countries, including three UN Security Council permanent members, condemned the attacks on UN peacekeepers, called for their immediate cessation and for ensuring proper protection for UN personnel in accordance with international law.

On October 1, 2024 the Geneva based European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) celebrated the 70th anniversary of its establishment. In the ceremony organized to mark this important anniversary, which was held at CERN premises in Geneva, Poland was represented by the Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Dr Maria Mrówczyńska. The Polish delegation also included the head of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Poland to the United Nations in Geneva, Minister Plenipotentiary Mirosław Broiło, as well as representatives of the Department of Innovation and Development of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education - Mr. Michał Goszczyński, Deputy Director, and Mr. Dariusz Drewniak, Counsellor General.

Political prisoners cannot be forgotten – the international community must continue efforts to release them – called the participants of the event on human rights in Russia, organized by Poland and Luxembourg on 24 September 2024 within the grounds of the United Nations Office in Geneva.

At the UN headquarters in New York, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) elected a new bureau, which will hold its functions for one year, until July 2025. The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Poland to the UN, Ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski, was appointed vice-chairman of the Council.
