25.07.2024

At the UN headquarters in New York, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) elected a new bureau, which will hold its functions for one year, until July 2025. The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Poland to the UN, Ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski, was appointed vice-chairman of the Council.

ECOSOC

-Entrusting the function in the ECOSOC Bureau is an expression of recognition of Poland's role and ambitions in the UN development policy. Sustainable development is the second most important area of UN activity in New York, next to peace and security. It is very important that Poland has the opportunity to work on the UN development agenda. And we will shape it following the motto of our membership in ECOSOC: "Developing in solidarity", which can become a Polish brand in this policy. – said Ambassador Szczerski.

The new chairman of ECOSOC is Canadian Ambassador Robert Rae. In addition, the Bureau will include representatives of Nepal, Costa Rica and the African group, who, together with the Polish ambassador, represent all the UN regional groups.

ECOSOC is the most important UN body coordinating activities for sustainable development. The Council consists of 54 members elected for a 3-year term. Each year, the General Assembly renews a third part of the Council's composition - Poland was elected last year for 2024-2026. The Bureau manages the work of ECOSOC and represents it in relations with states and other UN bodies.

Polish priorities in ECOSOC are building the resilience of societies to crises, reducing inequalities and strengthening global food security.
