Undersecretary of State Wojciech Gerwel traveled to the United States visited New York where he took part in the UN Security Council open debate and the Council’s briefing on Ukraine, and held bilateral meetings.
During the UN Security Council debate, the participants discussed challenges to be overcome to guarantee respect for the rule of law, particularly the provisions of the United Nations Charter and the Declaration on Principles of International Law concerning Friendly Relations and Cooperation among States in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.
- The conduct of Russia is a clear example of the rule of force. This stands in radical opposition to the rule of law expressed in the letter and spirit of the UN Charter - said Deputy Minister Gerwel during the debate. He also pointed out that it is necessary that the perpetrators of all international crimes committed on the Ukrainian territory should be held to account and punished. The diplomat stressed that Poland strongly supports international initiatives aimed at ensuring accountability.
During the UN Security Council briefing on Ukraine, Deputy Minister Gerwel emphasised the importance of Poland’s assistance to Ukraine.
- In addition to offering shelter to millions of Ukrainian refugees, Poland keeps providing and facilitating transfers of multidimensional aid as well as hosting several hundred humanitarian workers from over a dozen of UN agencies and international organisations. We are the main support gateway for Ukraine and it is our intention to continue in this particular role as long as it is required - noted the Deputy Minister.
On the sidelines of the events in New York, Deputy Minister Gerwel held talks with Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Dzhaparova, and UN Under Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua.
