Consul General Mateusz Sakowicz

Consul General of the Republic of Poland in New York

Mateusz Sakowicz is a graduate in political science with a specialization in international relations and holds a postgraduate degree in European administration from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. He is fluent in English, French, and German. He is a career diplomat and an appointed civil service officer.

He began his diplomatic career serving the Republic of Poland in 2006. Initially, for nearly three years, he worked in the Political-Economic Section of the Polish Embassy in Dublin. At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters, he served in the Department of Foreign Economic Policy and later continued his professional development in the Department of Security Policy. Following a successful competition, from 2011-2013, he was seconded as a national expert at the rank of Second Secretary to the Permanent Mission of the European Union to the United Nations in New York. During this time, within the framework of the European External Action Service, he dealt with issues at the UN such as disarmament, non-proliferation, counter-terrorism, and sanctions regimes.

He was subsequently appointed to the Political Section of the Permanent Mission of Poland to the United Nations in New York, where his responsibilities included matters of peace and security in Africa and humanitarian issues. During this period, he was responsible for co-organizing numerous high-level state visits and was part of the team leading Poland's campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

After the successful campaign and return to the MFA headquarters, he first took the position of head of the Political Section, and then as Deputy Director of the Department of the United Nations and Human Rights, he played a leading coordinating role on behalf of the MFA during Poland's membership in the UN Security Council in 2018-2019. In recognition of his efforts during this period, he was awarded the Bronze Cross of Merit.

From August 2020 to June 2024, he served as Deputy Permanent Representative of Poland to the United Nations in New York, overseeing the mission’s political division and participating in several successful electoral processes within the Organization’s system for Poland and Polish candidates.

On July 1, 2024, he assumed the position of Consul General of the Republic of Poland in New York.
