Prime Minister after meeting with V4 leaders and Croatian Prime Minister: the amount of solidarity is encouraging and unprecedented
23.11.2021
The Head of the Polish Government met with the leaders of the Visegrad Group (V4) countries in Budapest and with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia in Zagreb. These are subsequent talks between Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and European leaders regarding geopolitical threats in Europe. The main topic of both meetings was the current situation on the Polish-Belarusian border of the European Union. The Prime Minister stressed the solidarity of NATO and European countries amid the current multidimensional political crisis – related not only to migration but also power generation industry and cyber-attacks.
Summit of V4 Prime Ministers
"Solidarity is the trademark of the Visegrad Group," said the Head of the Polish government, while thanking the leaders of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. The Prime Ministers of these countries have expressed their sympathy, as well as their support for the imposition of sanctions and the financing of border protection by the European Union. They have also offered their assistance. The Prime Minister drew attention to the need for joint action and response in the face of the crisis. He emphasised that we are not only protecting the Polish border but also the border of the European Union and NATO. At the same time, the Head of the Polish government expressed his gratitude towards the officers and soldiers guarding the border. He also pointed out that joint diplomatic efforts are already yielding results - in the form of a reduced influx of migrants to Belarus. However, this crisis is by no means solely the result of the situation at the border. The Prime Minister pointed out that this phenomenon must be looked at from a broader perspective, taking into account other factors. One of these is the energy dimension, which is affected by the high price of CO2 emissions allowances and the manipulation of gas prices. These factors directly translate into high living costs and inflation, which affects many European countries. The Head of the Polish Government also drew attention to the constant battle against disinformation, cyber-attacks and hostile propaganda. These types of actions aim to provoke new conflicts. Still, they are unsuccessful because both the Visegrad Group and the European Union are jointly responding to the crisis.
Meeting with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia
Following the summit of the Visegrad Group leaders, the Prime Minister met in Zagreb with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, Andrej Plenković. The meeting was part of a series of discussions between the Head of the Polish government and European leaders. The discussion focused on current geopolitical threats in Europe. The leading topic of the talks was the current situation on the Polish-Belarusian border.
"In this part of the Balkans, everyone knows what a migration crisis is. What we are dealing with in Belarus and on the Polish-Belarusian border is not just a traditional migration crisis. It is the exploitation of people to cause deep destabilisation over this part of Europe," said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
Support of European leaders
The Prime Minister has spoken to many leaders of the international community in recent days. On 21 November, he met with the prime ministers of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The firm resistance of Poland and the Baltic states has led to a halt in the activities of the Belarusian regime. Meetings of this nature are aimed at coordinating the response of the European countries and NATO members to the hybrid activities of Belarus.
The Head of the Polish Government discussed the migration situation with, among others, the Prime Minister of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government and with the US Director of National Intelligence, Avril Haines. The international actions have a common goal - to ensure security on the Polish-Belarusian border of the European Union.
Situation at the Polish-Belarusian border of the European Union
Since the summer holidays, the Polish-Belarusian border of the European Union has been under the constant pressure of migrants, who are being directed there by the Belarusian services. In recent weeks, attempts to violate the territorial integrity of EU countries and acts of provocation carried out by the Belarusian services have intensified.
