A tribute to late former President of the European Commission Jacques Delors
28.12.2023
Jacques Delors was a statesman who devoted his life to the development of European cooperation and solidarity for lasting peace. By the Polish President's decision, he was awarded the Republic of Poland’s Grand Cross of the Order of Merit in 1993 for his efforts to bring Poland closer to the European structures and for his contribution to the process of European unification.
He relentlessly laid the foundations for what we now call the European Union. He headed the "Delors Commission" which recommended creating the European Union's single market and introducing the euro. Jacques Delors was also an advocate of such prominent milestones of European integration as the Schengen Agreement or the establishment of the "Erasmus" programme. At the same time, he made strong efforts to enlarge the European Union by the Nordic and the former Eastern Bloc countries.
His death is an irreparable loss for all European states whose unification and cooperation were his ultimate goal.
