Albanian Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs visits Warsaw
09.09.2019
“Poland fully supports the European perspective of the Western Balkans and stands for a quick launching of accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia,” said Minister Czaputowicz during today’s meeting with Albanian Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Gent Cakaj. “We hope that the decisions will be made during the General Affairs Council session in October,” he added.
Polish-Albanian talks focused on Western Balkans’ European integration, bilateral economic relations and cooperation within NATO. Minister Czaputowicz spoke out for the EU enlargement policy. Both sides agreed that the furthering of EU-Western Balkans relations and the future full membership of the Balkan states in the Union, are essential to ensure security, prosperity and stability of the entire continent.
Polish foreign minister appreciated the advancement of reforms introduced by Albanian authorities, especially of the judiciary. He also encouraged Albanians to make further efforts to adapt the country to European standards and acquis. Minister Czaputowicz also noted EU’s appreciation of the changes - in May this year, the European Council recommended the EU Council to start accession negotiations with Albania. The decision is to be made in the October session of the General Affairs Council. During the meeting, Polish foreign minister repeated Poland’s positive stance on the opening of accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia in Autumn 2019.
The ministers also addressed Poland’s activity in the region and discussed this year’s Western Balkans Summit in Poznan. “The Western Balkans Summit in July triggered specific actions that help to forge closer links in the region and facilitate the EU integration process of the aspiring states,” underlined Minister Czaputowicz. He also assured that Poland’s support for the Western Balkan partners is long-term and strategic, and referred to the expert assistance provided by Poland to the candidate countries. Besides the successful twinning projects, the support is provided at the Tirana Conference which was inaugurated by both ministers in Warsaw. The purpose of the conference is to support Albania’s European aspirations by sharing Poland’s pre-accession and transformation experience, which will contribute to the successful implementation of European law in Albania. Over 30 experts from both countries attended this year’s conference, co-organised by the Ministry of Investment and Economic Development.
The deepening of bilateral economic cooperation was also discussed in the plenary session. The economic growth in Poland and Albania and good growth prospects for the years to come, provide new opportunities to increase trade. Another important issue was the cooperation in tourism, in particular the security of Polish tourists. Albania is one of the most promising market of tourist services in Europe.
Minister Czaputowicz thanked Minister Cakaj for the cooperation in NATO. Albanian soldiers in Latvia actively contribute to the strengthening of NATO’s Eastern flank. “Poland appreciates Albania’s commitment evidenced by its soldiers presence in the Treaty’s Battle Group Latvia. Understanding the allies’ needs builds mutual trust and proves the power of NATO,” underlined the minister.
